Welcome to Wyndcroft!
Parents have many family-friendly options within the early childhood program. They may have their child attend for three mornings each week (Tuesday through Thursday) or a full five sessions. As children experience school and mature, parents may wish to switch from three-day enrollment to five-day. Parents may choose to have their child stay for Lunch Bunch, which ends at 1 p.m. In addition, there is an Extended Day Program of activities for those early childhood students and prekindergarteners who are ready for a full day of activities. This program is led by the prekindergarten teachers. Enrollment in Lunch Bunch and Extended Day is open daily, and parents can choose from these options as best suits their schedule. Some children attend Extended Day activities on a daily basis, but others attend on a more flexible schedule. Language Arts
Language arts skills are mainly centered on reading readiness skills. The teacher reads stories aloud to the children every day. Children gain listening skills as they respond to the stories that are read to them. Children role-play and act out stories as extensions of listening to stories. Participation in discussions is encouraged and facilitates in assessment of the child’s understanding. The following are our language arts objectives for early childhood students:
Mathematics Our studies involve the basics of mathematics: numeral recognition, counting, shapes, thinking, and problem solving. Children learn to count objects, count by rote, identify the eight basic shapes, and put together puzzles.
Social Studies Children learn about their community and community helpers. They discuss and celebrate holidays through a variety of activities including crafts, baking, songs, games, and stories.
Science
Art Children develop their small motor skills as they explore a variety of media and projects. Children are encouraged to try new media, express their creativity, and enjoy art. Art projects are introduced at circle time, then the children their projects in small groups. Children practice cutting with scissors on both straight and curved lines. They also practice exhibiting control when using a crayon and holding scissors and crayons correctly.
Music Musical experiences in the early childhood classroom are many and varied. They include finger plays, rhymes, songs (listening and singing), musical games, movement (such as dancing and marching), and percussion instruments. Children are encouraged to participate in all activities, regardless of ability. The enjoyment of songs and appreciation of music is valued.
