Wyndcroft Teacher Stories: Meet Mr. Ballantine

Phillip Ballantine has been at Wyndcroft since 2014. In that time he has taught Drama, Creative Movement, and Physical Education. Mr. Ballantine also directs the Wyndcroft Players Spring Musical Production as well as the Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, and 4th Grade Class Plays.

Why do you like teaching at Wyndcroft?

I am one of the lucky teachers who works with every child on campus, from the 3 year olds in Early Childhood up to the 8th Graders getting ready for graduation. I love watching the kids realize their own talents and then work to develop them as they grow. Each child finds their talents at a different time and it is exciting to watch the process.

What is your favorite Wyndcroft tradition?

For the past few years, I have been one of the chaperones for the 8th Grade trip to Boston. These days away from campus are always one of the highlights of the year for the 8th graders. They get to spend time together as a group, out of the classroom and out of the state, and see sights that they have been learning about in their American history classes. This time spent with them is always so much fun. I look forward to it every year.

What is a unique experience, talent, or interest that you bring to your classroom to help shape the learning experience of your students?

A little known fact about me is that I have a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology. Especially during my Advisory periods, I love to use my knowledge of psychology to discuss with the students about how the study skills they are learning are good for both school and life.

What impresses you about Wyndcroft students?

Our students have a wonderful view of the world. As they grow and learn here at Wyndcroft, they gain knowledge about how they fit into that world. I admire their ability to apply what they learn in the classroom to real world situations and the further apply those to their life goals.

What do you want your students to gain from having known you?

After learning from me, I really want students to know that the self can be expressed in many forms and mediums. For some students, they find themselves on stage, for others it is on the athletic field or in the library. No matter where they find themselves, I hope they are comfortable and confident in who they are.
