Parent Visiting Day: A Partnership

Submitted by, Brooke Musser, Early Childhood and 5th Grade History Teacher

I remember as a child how excited I was to have Parent Visiting Day at my school. It was the day that my Mom and Dad got to come into my classroom to see all of the fun things that I was learning at the time. Now as a grown up, I get to experience it from both ends of the spectrum as the parent and the teacher. I get to see the joy in my students faces as their parents come in to our classroom to see all of the learning adventures that we have in Early Childhood, and get a sneak peek in my own children's classroom to see all of the hard work that they have been doing.

I understand at times it is hard to know what your child has been doing at school when you get the typical response to "How was your school day?" followed by the one word responses such as "Good" and "Fine." Parent Visiting Day gives you that snap shot of what your son or daughter experiences throughout their day here at Wyndcroft.

As parents, you are your child's first teacher. Then we are lucky enough as educators to have you share them with us, so that we may help them continue their educational journey. Albert Einstein said "It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." It is our hope that during your morning with us you see an awakening occurring in your child that is the beginning of their journey to be lifelong learners.

Remember, Parent Visiting Day is just a glimmer of the magical things that go on in our classrooms with your children. To get the full scoop of what has been going on with your child you need to talk to them: at dinner, in the car or at bedtime. Ask them open-ended questions like the following:

  • Tell me about the best part of your day.
  • What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
  • What was the funniest part of your day?
  • Tell me about what you read in class.
  • Who did you play with today? What did you play?
  • What's the biggest difference between this year and last year?
  • What rules are different at school than our rules at home?
  • Who did you sit with at lunch?
  • Can you show me something you learned or did today?

The parent-teacher partnership is all year long and not just on Parent Visiting Day. We look forward to working with you to make this year amazing for your student.
