Pre-Season Soccer Fun

Soccer Season is Right Around the Corner!

Have you heard the news? Wyndcroft is starting a Girls’ Soccer Team in the fall of 2021. As we prepare for this inaugural season, Mr. Dorris has put together five activities that any player can do at home to get ready to represent the Wolverines out on the soccer pitch.

Stretch

Before you begin any kind of workout, whether it is for soccer or another sport, it is important to stretch out your muscles and get them ready for exercise. For soccer, it is especially important to stretch out your legs and feet as these are the primary muscles you will be using. Here’s a video that explains a few stretches that you might find helpful.

If you are feeling like you want to stretch a bit more, here’s a Yoga workout that has been specifically designed for soccer players. No equipment required!

Get Moving

Soccer players are always on the move. Even goalies are always tracking the ball and moving into position so they can be ready at any moment to block a shot. It’s important to get ready for all that running by getting up and getting going this summer. Take a walk or a run everyday. Even just a 15 minute walk can make a big difference in your endurance.

Pro tip: A standard soccer game at Wyndcroft is 50 minutes long. Build up to a daily walk/run that is that long.

Can’t get outside to walk or run? Here’s an indoor conditioning workout we think you will enjoy. It uses a soccer ball and soccer footwork techniques to get you moving!

Dribble

Dribbling in soccer is an important skill for any player. To help you learn to control the ball as you move around the field, you can simply put a ball in front of your feet and go! Make sure you keep the ball close to you so it doesn’t get away from you. Be sure to use the inside, outside, and laces part of your cleats!

Here are a few dribbling drills that you can easily do at home. This video does use cones, but you can use anything you have in the house to use as field and practice markers.

Passing

Passing the soccer ball is hard to do without a partner but it doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Find a wall and kick the ball against the wall. It helps you both kick the ball and receive it back!

If you do have someone to play with, simply kick the ball back and forth between the two of you. Move farther apart to increase the difficulty of accuracy and strength of the kick needed to complete the pass.

Equipment Check

Do you have everything you need for the soccer season? Let’s take a look.

All Wyndcroft soccer players will need:

  • Cleats

  • Shin Guards

  • Water Bottle

Wyndcroft will provide your uniform which includes a jersey, shorts and socks to go over your shin guards.

And if you plan on playing any sports at Wyndcroft this fall, make sure you fill out the Athletic paperwork and turn it in on Orientation Day!!

We look forward to welcoming you back to campus soon.
