Jean B. Sawyer, 95, of Sheffield died at 10:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society - Prophets Riverview in Prophetstown, IL. She was born Nov. 16, 1922, in Fitchburg, Mass., the daughter of Milo and Gladys (Farnsworth) Bacon. She married Dr. John R. Sawyer Nov. 17, 1943, in Norwood, Mass. They shared 50 years together. He preceded her in death in 1994. She graduated from Norwood High School in Norwood, Mass. She also graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Art in Boston, Mass., where she met her husband, and later earned her bachelor’s degree from Kutztown University.

She worked at the Kutztown University bookstore for many years and later taught second grade at The Wyndcroft School (1973 to1986). Jean was a member of the Bureau Township Community Church, a prayer group and Bible study, and Kappa Delta Pi education honor society. She was an accomplished watercolor artist, pianist and church organist, and quilter. She  tutored many children in the Sheffield area and also taught piano lessons.

The Jean B. Sawyer Award

Each year at Honors Day, The Jean B. Sawyer Award is given to a 5th grade student whom the faculty believes is the embodiment of Jean’s traits and the qualities in which she believed.  Jean was a willing worker in all areas of The School, a curious student of the world around her, an enthusiastic reader, and a positive person who always gave her best and her complete all.  If you had known her, you would understand the special value and honor of this award.

Jean B. Sawyer returned to teaching later in life.  When she came to The Wyndcroft School, she had white hair, enthusiasm, and a deep passion for learning. This firm – but loving and caring – teacher of second grade was a marvelous role model not only for her students but also for the faculty of The Wyndcroft School.  Jean Sawyer was an enthusiastic learner who taught with energy, inspiration, grace, and dignity.  She expected, moreover she
received, the best from her students.
