Seventh Grade

Seventh graders at Wyndcroft take on the challenge of more rigorous work as they explore their subject areas in even greater depth. They factor polynomials, learn about classical deities, master passé compose, and debate the causes of the American Revolution. A number of changes also take place in Science class. Students now have a weekly double period to complete laboratory experiments and dissections. In addition, seventh graders engage in a science fair research project. Teachers work carefully with students as they complete their experiments, record data, prepare display boards, and submit formal papers for both Science and Language Arts.

Language Arts

Novel study reinforces and strengthens use of literary devices and comprehension skills
Novels include The Giver, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and Animal Farm
Comprehension skills include characterization, tone, mood, internal and external conflict, allegory, fable
Author history and writing nuances precede novel studies where relevant
Figurative language including simile, metaphor, personification, irony, and colloquial speech are further explored
Note taking and research tools supplement the cross-curricular seventh grade science fair project
Various resources are used to teach the poetic elements of prose, speaker, alliteration, and tone
The writing process is used to create the framework for writing both fictional and non-fictional works
Punctuation, capitalization, complex sentence structure, and the parts of speech are developed
Various texts are used to study the complexities of mystery story writing in particular, and the idea of literary genres in general
The second level of the Sadlier-Oxford vocabulary series expands knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, parts of speech, and definition
Summer reading is assigned to provide continued growth as a reader and writer

Mathematics

Comprehensive review of whole numbers, decimals, percentages, fractions, number relationships, and geometric concepts
Introduction to algebra with variables, order of operations, translations of words into symbols, problem solving plan, number lines, opposites, and absolute value
Operations with integers
Basic one-step and multi-step transformations
Factoring polynomials
Prime factorization
Solving word problems using quadratic equations

The creation of a democratic government and the earliest presidents
Events leading up to the Industrial Revolution
Analysis of challenging texts, primary sources, and eyewitness accounts
Interpretation of data sources and forming conclusions

Advanced mastery of spreadsheets

Health

Music

The study of different musical time periods (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary)
Performance of skits to explain aspects/significances of each time period
Understanding and reinterpretation of historical compositions in a contemporary context
Students have the ability to join chorus and the school musical as an extra-curricular activity

Physical Education

Students in grades six through eight take part in team sports and athletic activities. Students may choose to participate in team sports each season or participate in an alternative athletic option. These options may include fitness, yoga, racquet sports, dance, or karate. The fall team sport options are boys’ soccer, girls’ field hockey, and co-ed cross-country. In the winter, students may choose the team sport of basketball and the spring team sport option is lacrosse (both for boys and girls).
